Many major paint manufacturers have brought out paint ranges with claimed antimicrobial properties. They are often marketed to specifiers and painters as being a product which will ‘protect’ the health of the occupants of the buildings where they used from nasty bacteria and disease. In some products, metals, such as silver, are impregnated into the product to provide the antimicrobial properties. In others, products such as Microban are used as antimicrobials, made from the chemical Triclosan, a chemical of concern because of its acute toxicity.

Many painters think that are doing their clients a favor by using and recommending these products, which often come with a premium price tag.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concluded a 2003 comprehensive study of infection control practice with the statement that “No evidence is available to suggest that use of these [antimicrobial] products will make consumers and patients healthier or prevent disease. No data support the use of these items as part of a sound infection-control strategy.” Kaiser Permanente similarly concluded in a December 2006 position statement that “[we] do not recommend environmental surface finishes or fabrics that contain antimicrobials for the purpose of greater infection control and the subsequent prevention of hospital acquired infections. There is no evidence that environmental surface finishes or fabrics containing antimicrobials assist in preventing infections.”

Is this another example of manufacturers feeding us spin? What we need are less chemicals in our paint, not more! What do you think?

Hormone disrupting chemicals are not classical poisons or typical carcinogens. They play by different rules. They defy the linear logic of current testing protocols built on the assumption that higher doses do more damage. For this reason, contrary to our long-held assumption, screening chemicals for cancer risk has not always protected us from kinds of harm.

Some hormonally active chemicals appear to pose little if any risk of cancer. And as Lindeman and Burlington discovered, such chemicals are typically not poisons in the normal sense. Until we recognize this, we will be looking in the wrong places asking the wrong questions, and talking at cross-purposes.

Hormones and their receptors fit together with a “lock and key” mechanism. Under normal conditions a natural hormone binds to its receptor and activates genes in the Nucleus to produce the appropriate biological response. Hormone mimics and blockers can contribute to disruption of cellular activity.

Based on the warnings from wildlife and lab animals, what kinds of problems should we expect? Earlier chapters explored how hormonally active synthetic chemicals can damage the reproductive system, alter the nervous system and brain, and impact the immune system.

Animals contaminated by these chemicals show various behavioural effects, including aberrant mating behaviour and increased parental neglect of nests. Synthetic chemicals can derail the normal expression of sexual characteristics of animals, in some cases masculinising females and feminizing males. Some animal studies indicate that exposure to hormonally active chemicals prenatally or in adulthood increases vulnerability to hormone-responsive cancers, such as malignancies in the breast, prostate, ovary and uterus.

Whereas health foods and natural health are now well established and accepted by large numbers of people, the concept of the “Healthy Home” is novel to most people. Ironically, the same people who select “natural “ personal care products and organic foods are still likely to choose furnishing, paints and DIY items made of materials containing the very burden of chemical additives that they have rejected for food and body care.

Very little is yet known about acceptable concentrations and exposure levels of any of the new pollutants, or about what may constitute and “unreasonable risk”. A manufacturer’s evaluation should be subject to checks and final approval by independent government bodies, which should also monitor the substances uses and concentrations. Most governments, however, cannot keep pace with the deluge of new chemicals and controls are weakening despite efforts by consumer and pressure groups.

We all try to have healthy food, healthy clothing, build mud brick homes and yet we have a high pollution inside of our homes. Why is that? We buy products where we do not know the ingredients and slowly unwanted chemicals are creeping into our home. One source may be paint you buy in a hardware shop. The indoor pollution can be 1o times higher than outside.!!!

Nearly five out of ten children suffer from allergies and will become a burden for the family and our medical system in the future.

Remember the days when painting was safe and simple! Well times have changed and today we know that conventional paints – solvent and water –based paints – can have several unwanted (toxic) ingredients like preservatives, solvents, additives, coal tire pigments, resins etc.

At Bio Products Australia we have the expertise to provide you with information why “Natural Paint Products” are better for your family and the environment. Natural paint products are predominately made from chemicals found in food ingredients such as linseed oil, safflower oil and in minerals.

Do you want to expose your family to this?

Paint Linked to Allergy Risks in Pre-School Age Children

A new study has found that children who sleep in bedrooms containing fumes from water-based paints and solvents are two to four times more likely to suffer allergies or asthma.

The study, published in the journal of the Public Library of Science, PLoS ONE, analysed chemical compounds – propylene glycol and glycol ethers, known as PGEs – in the bedroom air of 400 toddlers and preschoolers. Researchers found that higher concentrations of these chemicals were linked with substantially higher rates of asthma, stuffy noses and eczema.

The research was a collaboration between scientists at Harvard University and Sweden’s Kalstad University. The study followed 198 children in Varmland, Sweden, between the ages of 1 and 5 who had asthma or at least two symptoms or wheezing or rhinitis (nasal allergies) without a cold or eczema in the previous year, as well as 202 children with no symptoms.

The children with nasal allergies tended to have a PGE concentration in their bedrooms that was twice as high as the concentration found in rooms of the children with no symptoms. The higher the dose, the more likely the children were to suffer from rhinitis, asthma, or eczema, even when concentrations were low.

Children in bedrooms with the highest concentrations were 4.2 times more likely to have rhinitis, twice as likely to have asthma and 2.5 times more likely to have eczema, compared with children with the lowest concentrations in their rooms

A history of repainting at least one room in the house pre- or post-natal to the birth of the child was associated with a 63% increase in mean PGEs compared to those who never repainted. Thus, repainting might have provided a sustained exposure since the gestational period or shortly following the birth. And nobody has ever looked into that how much damaged it can make to your health as an adult.

Propylene glycol and glycol ethers are a diverse group of compounds with superior solvent and coalescent properties. Due to their lower volatility and higher degree of solvency, they are widely used in water-based paint and not counted as solvents according to the regulations. Again a gap for conventional paint manufacturer to marked their products as solvent free!

Discover BIOFA SILICATE PAINTS as a long lasting solution to the substrates of your home/commercial or historic building. Silicate mineral paints have been developed and used overseas for over 100 years.

They are ideally suited for harsh weathering conditions and todays environmental problems have led to increasing demands for environmentally harmless, long lasting and high quality paints. This is the reason why increasing numbers of architects throughout the world recommend the use of Silicate Mineral Paint and because of its flexible range of colours and its ease of use.

What are silicate mineral paints?

The raw material come directly from the mineral word : the binder is potassium waterglass. J.W.v.Goethe described it in 1768 as “liquor silicium” which emerges if one melts pure quartz sand with an adequate proportion of alkali, whereby a transparent glass is obtained which melts in connection with oxygen and gives a beautiful clear liquidity. The pigments are earth minerals and iron oxides; the fillers are marble dust etc. Only a small fraction of the raw material are derived from the living nature. These are used to help regulate the process of production. After application the paint penetrates and chemically reacts with the mineral substrate onto which it is applied. It becomes part of the surface whereas organic paints merely form a skin on the surface. The high water vapour permeability of the silicate mineral paint, due to the crystalline nature, ensures that humidity which is present in the masonry can freely pass out from the building structure. The breath ability of the building structure is maintained. Also light rays and thermal rays are reflected and this reduces the thermal stress on the building structure and thereby prevents the substrate from cracking.

Why use silicate mineral paint?

Set some silicate rock and some synthetic material out exposed to the weather. After five years, the man-made material has been highly degraded and has released chemicals, some of which are highly toxic, into the environment. The rock is still there, hardly changed. This is reason enough to use silicate mineral paint on severely weathered surfaces.

Where are silicate mineral paint used?

Silicate mineral paints protect and add colour to exterior and interior walls of a mineral basis. From old baroque or stucco houses to new cinderblock or cement buildings, the mineral facades can be painted with silicate mineral paints. It allows the building to breathe, eliminating blistering, cracking, or peeling.

BIOFA Silicate paint offers many advantages:

long lasting durability

economical

easy to use

non toxic to the environment

contains no solvents except for pure water

binds chemically to mineral surfaces

extraordinarily breathing paint

stable colours, even over many years, excellent light fastness

they do not peel

they are non flammable

they act fungicidal, due to their alkaline nature.

The following products are available:

Euromin SILICATE PAINT, the basic silicate paint

Euromin SILICATE FIXATIVE, is the thinner and primer for Euromin SILICATE PAINT

Did you recently read this in your newspaper:

The study, published in the journal of the Public Library of Science, PLoS ONE, analyzed chemical compounds – propylene glycol and glycol ethers, known as PGEs – in the bedroom air of 400 toddlers and preschoolers. Researchers found that higher concentrations of these chemicals were linked with substantially higher rates of asthma, stuffy noses and eczema

Propylene glycol and glycol ethers are a diverse group of compounds with superior solvent and coalescent properties. Due to their lower volatility and higher degree of solvency, they are widely used in water-based paint.

We all try to have healthy food, healthy clothing, build mud brick homes and yet we

have a high pollution inside of our homes. Why is that? We buy products where we do not know the ingredients and slowly unwanted chemicals are creeping into our home. One source may be paint you buy in a hardware shop. The indoor pollution can be 1o times higher than outside.!!!

When the government regulated the solvents(VOC) the thought of the emission into the environment, but they did not think about your HEALTH!

Now the ugly solvents are coming into your home/office/workplace like ammonia or NMP(N-Mehtyl-2-pyrrolidane).
